Lupus & the Herbal Cure
by Aleks Strande, N.D., Ph.D.

The immune system is designed to attack foreign substances in the body but it can sometimes become confused as to who the “good guys” are. The immune system then may react by attacking innocent tissues and organs.

Lupus is the Latin word for wolf. The term has been associated with the disease since the 10th century, it is speculated that the name was given to describe the skin lesions (sores), which typically are red and were thought to resemble the bite of a wolf. Lupus is a condition that attacks healthy cells and tissues when the immune system has been compromised from within. Doctors are unclear as to how an autoimmune disease like lupus strikes but there are many theories, including environment, hormones, and heredity.

There are many types of lupus. The most frequently seen and most serious form of lupus is systemic lupus erythematosus, which has the ability to affect many different parts of the body. Additional types of lupus include dicoid lupus erythematosus which is characterized by a nagging skin rash; subcacure cutaneous lupus erythematosus, which produces sores on body parts exposed to the sun; drug-induced lupus which is caused by medications; and neonatal lupus, a rare variation that affects newborns.

When herbs and supplements are combined with conventional lupus treatments, the painful symptoms of this condition can greatly be decreased and even relieved. Certain herbs and supplements may even slow the progression of the disease. Most of the herbs that can be used for Lupus do not produce serious side effects or complications. Although many herbs are beneficial, it may take months before the benefits begin to occur.

There is a wide range of symptoms associated with lupus and most of them can be cured using natural herb extracts, such as willow bark which is known to ease muscle and joint pain associated with lupus, as well as act as an anti-inflammatory against joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. The fingers, wrists, knees, and hands are the most common parts of the body to suffer arthritic attacks. Other anti-inflammatory herbs include boswellia, ginger, and tumeric. These herbs are known to inhibit joint inflammation by preventing the production of prostaglandins and activation of inflammation-regulating genes through its effects on cell-signaling.

Licorice Root is another herbal remedy that can be used to treat lupus. It can be used to detoxify the body by purifying the blood and liver. An ingredient in licorice root known as glycyrrhizin is thought to counteract free radical production that causes inflammation and pain in people with inflammatory conditions like lupus. Further, licorice root protects the body from a number of toxins, including aflotoxin, some types of arsenic, nicotine and toxins in cancer drugs. Another property of licorice root is its ability to help the body conserve naturally produced steroids. This makes it beneficial in treating skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and all types of skin rashes. The health of the skin, the mucus membranes lining the various parts of the body, the blood and the nerves, and the joints are maintained in a healthy state by the various vitamin B complexes when they are taken as supplements on a regular basis. The inflammation can affect a lot of important organs and parts of the body, the supplements of the B complex vitamins used in combination with the vitamins C and E and the mineral selenium-all of which possess antioxidant properties will speed up the healing process in the body and in addition, will aid in protecting the heart and the blood vessels and circulatory system, the joints and the skin, and all other areas of the body likely to be affected by inflammation. To alleviate problems affecting the skin and the joints, the use of supplemental vitamin E may be a particularly effective remedy. Before taking an herbal remedy for psoriasis, please consult a doctor.

If lupus is ignored or not detected in time, a variety of complications may arise. With treatment, most people can thrive and properly function with this disease. Those who are without treatment, run the risk for sustaining life-threatening damage to their kidneys, central nervous system, blood vessels, lungs, and heart. Infection is more likely to settle in and the risk of cancer also increases with untreated lupus.
